When is a fine-art appraisal useful?

An appraisal provides an independent opinion of value for specific artwork, a specific purpose and a specific date.

Applications / decision index

Common reasons to request an appraisal.

The right approach depends on the artwork, the date and the decision the appraisal needs to support.

01

Insurance-related records

An owner may need a current artwork description and value opinion for coverage or claim discussions.

02

Estates and succession

Executors, trustees and families may need values for probate, inheritance, transfer or succession planning.

03

Equitable distribution

Divorce and other divisions of an art collection may require an independent value for the assets being distributed.

04

Gifts and donations

Donors, recipients and advisers may need an appraisal for planning, reporting or institutional requirements.

05

Damage or loss

Damage, theft or destruction of artworks may require evidence of condition, prior value, repair cost or loss.

06

Sale and collection planning

Owners may want independent market evidence before retaining, selling, gifting or reorganising a collection.

Creators

Artists can commission an appraisal of their own work.

An artist, studio or estate may need an independent value for succession, a loan, a donation, insurance-related records or an institutional discussion.

Price lists, invoices, commissions, exhibitions and studio records are useful evidence. They are not an independent appraisal on their own.

Limitations / read before proceeding

An appraisal is not authentication, legal or tax advice, real-estate valuation, condition reporting, insurance adjusting, or government and export clearance.

Decision Questions

What the opinion means—and what it does not.

What is a fine-art appraisal?+

It is an independent opinion of value for identified artwork, prepared for a specific client, intended use, intended users, value type and effective date. It is not a universal price that applies to every purpose, market or date.

Why do the value type and effective date matter?+

The intended use determines the defined value type, such as fair market value, market value or replacement value, and the date at which that value is considered. An estate may require a date of death, a loss claim a date of loss, and a divorce a date set by the relevant jurisdiction. A current value cannot simply be substituted for a required historical date.

How is the value developed, and who is responsible for it?+

The appraiser analyses the relevant market and evidence, applies the sales comparison approach and any applicable cost or income approach, explains why an approach was not used, and reconciles the result. Reports use documented controls drawn from USPAP 2024 and the ISA Appraisal Report Writing Standard under Artpraisal's professional and contractual commitment, not as UAE statutory certification. The signing human appraiser applies professional judgment, determines which requirements and procedures apply to the assignment, reviews the evidence, adopts the conclusion and signs the certification; software does not guarantee compliance or make the final value decision. The report also provides the signing appraiser's curriculum vitae; this does not imply UAE statutory certification, regulatory status or professional membership.

Is an appraisal the same as an auction estimate or an offer to buy?+

No. An auction estimate is prepared for a particular sale context. An appraisal is an independent value opinion for an agreed purpose, market and effective date. It is not an offer to buy, a reserve recommendation or a guarantee of a sale price.

Does an appraisal authenticate the artwork or prove provenance or title?+

No. An appraisal is not a certificate or warranty of authorship, date, origin, authenticity, provenance or title. Client-supplied facts remain representations unless independently verified. If the value depends on an uncertain authenticity fact, the report identifies the assumption and explains how the result could be affected if it is false.

Can an appraisal be used for an estate, gift or divorce?+

It can support estate, probate, succession, gift, donation, divorce or equitable-distribution work when the assignment uses the required value definition, effective date, intended users and report format. The client should confirm those requirements with the relevant lawyer, tax adviser, court or authority. The appraiser remains independent and does not advocate for a party or decide the legal, tax or distribution outcome.

Does an appraisal provide legal or tax advice?+

No. The report may identify the assignment facts, value definition and potentially relevant limitations, but it does not interpret law, calculate tax, determine ownership, direct a settlement or replace advice from a qualified legal or tax professional.

Can an artist commission an appraisal of their own work?+

Yes. Artists, studios and estates may need an independent appraisal for succession, loans, gifts, donations, insurance-related records or institutional discussions. The artist's own prices and records are evidence, not an independent appraisal.

Does an appraisal clear an artwork for export from the UAE?+

No. An appraisal does not grant transfer or export clearance. Federal Law No. 11 of 2017 and, where applicable, Dubai Law No. 11 of 2026 may require specialist legal review, registration or an export permit. Artpraisal may flag a potential issue, but the client must obtain advice and any required approval from the competent authority.
